Let’s explore the evolving relationships between the neighborhood of Wadarwadi, migration, and Pune’s oldest construction workers -
Let’s hear from the women of Wadarwadi, what role did gender play on Pune’s construction sites?
How has the nature of construction work changed over the past three generations?
Construction workers who were active before the 1990s and their descendants were invited to share lived experiences, know-how, and memories of how the nature of work has changed with time. Documenting these unwritten histories is a first step to increasing the awareness of past and current construction workers’ contributions to the making of Pune.
During the recent 3-day-long engagement in Wadarwadi, Pune, the exhibition and exercises were designed to document the largely unwritten knowledge of the Wadar community. Each day, one theme (or subtheme) of research was explored; the conversations began at the scale of the settlement and its histories, moving into the social dynamics and relationships of building practices, and finally zoomed into identification of tools and processes in construction.
